When it comes to water sports, no state in the U.S. can match the state of Hawaii. Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that is completely surrounded by water. The Hawaiian islands consist of 132 islands reaching over 1,523 miles of ocean. These islands, though most only barely extend above sea level are actually the tips of huge mountains known as shield volcanos. The largest of these is Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii and extends 13,796 feet above sea level and 16,200 feet below sea level making it the tallest mountain in the world. Several hundred feet taller than Mt. Everest. Hawaii also is the most isolated population center on the face of the earth. Hawaii is 2,390 miles from California, 3,850 miles from Japan, 4,900 miles from China and 5,280 miles from the Philippines. That's a lot of water to cover just to get there. The main group of islands consist of the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai and there are over 283 beaches, 29 harbors and over 50 boat launch ramps located around these islands. FISHING: Hawaii has always been famous as a world renowned fishing destination. Catches of Pacific Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Black Marlin, Spear fish, Mahi Mahi, Yellow fin Tuna, Big eye Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Ono (Wahoo), Amberjack Snapper, Grouper and Giant Trivally hit the docks daily. Kona on the Island of Hawaii (aka "The Big Island") holds two thirds of Hawaii's charter fishing fleet at Honokohau harbor. Kona is also known as "The Pacific Blue Marlin capital of the world". SAILING: Most of Hawaii's coastline beauty can only be accessed from the sea. Nothing can match the quiet solitude of sailing along the clear blue seas while viewing water falls, rocky cliffs, pristine beaches and occasionally, Hawaiian spinner Dolphin playing along side the boat. DIVING: Hawaii has some of the worlds top rated dive sites and is home to 450+ marine species of which 30% are found no where else in the world. On your dives you can expect to see many varieties of fish, Green Sea Turtles, Moray Eels, Manta Rays, Sharks, Spotted Eagle Rays, Hawaiian Monk Seals and you might also hear the distinct high pitched clicking sounds of the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin or the haunting beauty of the Humpback whales singing. SNORKEL CRUISES: Many of Hawaii's best snorkel destinations can only be accessed by boat. Many of the charters are sail/snorkel charters that give you the benefit of both a sailing adventure and a chance to stop and cool off along the way. ZODIAC RIDES: Cover a lot of coastline fast. This is definitely a thrill ride excursion. Darting along the coastline stopping along the way to see unique coastal formations closer than any other boat can get you and exploring the inside of sea caves. SUBMARINE RIDES: The next best thing to diving! If you want to see the awesome underwater wonder of Hawaii but don't want to get wet doing it, this is your ticket. WHALE WATCHING: Hawaii is the host to many species of whales and dolphin. The most spectacular of these are the Humpback whales with their breaching (jumping out of the water) and their fluke flapping (waving aloha) antics. Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin are a common site and they can jump more than 30' in the air and love to play in the wakes of boats. Sperm Whales, Pigmy Whales and Pilot Whales are just a few more of the animals you might run across on one of these excursions. GLASS BOTTOM BOAT RIDES: If being under the water is a scary proposition for you or you want your kids to see the awesome splendor going on just under the oceans surface, a glass bottom boat ride may be just what you,ve been looking for.
